3.5. Why Polygon and not Ethereum?
As of recent times, with more and more individuals joining the cryptocurrency ecosystem, we have all witnessed Ethereum gas prices (transactional fees) reach extraordinary highs. Buyers and sellers have accepted that, on a good day, they will pay between $50 to $100 USD for a single transaction. On a busy day with a congested network, these fees can skyrocket. As it is planned to have more in-game blockchain developments, which require faster and cheaper transactions taking place in real time, the core layer of Ethereum is not a viable gateway at this point in time. The developing team opted for Polygon, formerly known as MATIC. Initially launched in 2017, Polygon is a second-layer protocol built on the Ethereum blockchain that is meant for developing decentralized apps. ... In simple terms, it solves the scalability issues that usually other cryptocurrencies face built on Ethereum blockchain, keeping the decentralized aspect intact.
As a whole, those who believe if Ethereum remains unable to scale, it will lose its competitive edge in the long-run as one of the truly decentralized blockchains in the industry. Ethereum has established itself well over the last 8 years and similar businesses alike want to help it grow and succeed rather than being overrun by a centralized solution.
While leveraging Ethereum’s network, Polygon, a PoS (Proof of Stake) blockchain enables faster and more cost efficient transactions that go beyond the standard second layer protocol. I jacked in at 10:00 pm OWT (OutWorld Time) to find Cyberpong in the middle of a torrential downpour. It seems to be perpetually raining in CP these days as if its architect is trying to wash away all our digital sins. The bright pastels of the neon lights reflected off the puddles on Soi 2 as I made my way around dark corners and winding alleys to Black Pagoda, in search of the elusive Vai—an ex-hooker-turned-loan shark with rumoured connections to a retired police chief who now runs a casino somewhere in this parallel online red-light district. I got word from one of the dancers in XXX Lounge that she had a business proposition for me, and I know from experience that everyone with questionable dealings in Cyberpong eventually checks in at Pagoda at some point during the night. She wasn’t there when I arrived, so I decided to order a drink and wait at the bar. The pole dancers cast in silhouette against the glass windows with sheets of pink-tinted rain beyond looked like something out of my recent dreams. That’s in the OutWorld, of course. In Cyberpong, nobody sleeps.
It was a typical night in Pagoda, with the same crop of familiar faces. Dancers were as much a part of the setting as the furniture. Girls I’d known for years and could count on to offer company and a casual chat. I spotted another regular. He decked out his avatar in nouveau-punk—yellow and black leather, like a character out of Mad Max. He’d be armed, I knew. I remembered he usually carries a knife in one boot and a whip-chain around his neck, disguised as a rosary. But he’s harmless. He wants to look intimidating, but he’s likely overcompensating for his OutWorld self. I pegged him as a long-distance player—probably located in Japan, or maybe a New York social justice liberal. What would his girlfriend say if she caught him roaming around in here? He didn’t move like a true Patpong native. He was a bit too cavalier with the girls, which means if he were in the OW Pong, he wouldn’t have the balls to come at once. But that’s what’s so great about Cyberpong. Anyone can become a local. Anyone can be a pimp—even if they’re actually thousands of miles away.
There was one unfamiliar face in the joint. A hooded stranger in a long, dark cloak. Looked a little bit like something out of a Tolkien fantasy. No obvious weapons but a cloak can hide a lot. The bartender asked who I was waiting for, which diverted my attention momentarily. When I looked back, the stranger was gone. I told the barmaid I was looking for Vai. She said Vai had already come and left, and that she mentioned she had business in BarBar. I knew what that meant. She had a reputation for dabbling in sadism. She liked to tie people up and hang them from the ceiling. I hesitated. Of all the watering holes in Cyberpong, the one where I felt least at home was BarBar. There’s a persistent air of chaos there as if anything could happen at any moment. It’s also a place where Bangkok Seven has no clout whatsoever. I’m an alien there, just like in the real BarBar in the OW. But Vai had piqued my curiosity. Why was she looking for me? What could she want with this rogue lounge lizard?
I headed out the back door and down the dark staircase to the street. As I stepped back into the rain, I caught a glimpse of the hooded figure from Pagoda. So. I’d picked up a tail. I thought about ducking into The Patpong Museum. Maybe I could lose my shadow in there. But at the last second I called an audible and doubled back along the soi, stopping to hand some money to a beggar, and momentarily caught the outline of the dark cloak as my pursuer stopped short and sank back into a dark corner.
I knew I didn’t want anyone following me to BarBar. There are too many side rooms, too many nooks and crannies, too many whips and chains. But I headed in that direction anyway, hoping for some way to misdirect my hanger-on. Just then, the mamasan at The Strip poked her head out the front door and beckoned me over. I followed her inside and was shocked to see Ploy—a gogo dancer from the OW who had left the pole nearly half a decade ago—listed on the roster for private live chat. I couldn’t resist seeing her again after so long, so I put my BarBar plans on hold and loaded her Livestream. She was magnificent as ever. She undressed for me and we talked about old times. I told her I missed her. She promised to text me in the OW. When the chat ended and I was back in The Strip, the hooded figure was waiting. We squared off. I held my breath, as the hood was pulled back to reveal the face of a woman I’d never seen before. She was strikingly beautiful, with porcelain skin, bright red hair and emerald green eyes. I just stood there, rapt and silent.
“I’ve come to warn you,” she said. “Vai is not what she seems.”
Just then the lights came up, and cops flooded into the bar. It was a raid.
I decided not to stick around to see the aftermath. I logged out of Cyberpong and went to sleep. Vai could wait until tomorrow.

I jacked in at around 8 am OW time, but of course, it was nighttime in Cyberpong. It’s always nighttime in Cyberpong. I made my way to BarBar and found Vai. She was playfully whipping the bare buttocks of a girl in a pink gimp mask, suspended from a chain in the ceiling. I suddenly remembered what the woman in the hooded cloak had said about Vai, that she’s “not what she seems.” What could it mean?
Vai flung the whip over her shoulder and stepped close to me. She was formidable in appearance. Jet black hair cut into a bob, dark red lipstick with two augmented vampire incisors, black pleather bustier, thigh-high black boots, no underwear. “Where’ve you been?” she asked. “I’ve been waiting. I have a job for you. Come on, let’s get a drink.”
We found a table in the corner, out of the way of prying eyes. “What’s the job?” I asked.
“I need you to find somebody,” she replied.
“Why me? I’m not a PI.”
“You’re Seven. Everyone knows you and you know everyone. You’ve been all over. You can get into places and talk to people without attracting attention.” She was right about that.
“What do I get out of it? And why should I help you? I don’t even know you.”
“You do know me. In the OutWorld.”My mind raced as I tried to run through the list of OW people I knew who have avatars in Cyberpong but couldn’t match this person to any known acquaintance.
“…….Who the fuck are you?” I demanded.
“All in good time,” she said. “If you help me, I can get you access to the most exclusive locations in Cyberpong—the ones, not even you can enter. Not without an invitation.
Up until now, I’ve been pretty content with my level of access in CP. I never thought of myself as a major player. More of a gogo rat, like the real me in the OW Patpong. But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t curious about what other exotic things went on behind the velvet ropes and locked doors of this digital playground. Then she leaned close and whispered in my ear.
“There’s also the small fact that—if you can find who I’m looking for—you’ll become the most famous person in all of Cyberpong.”
“Who is it?” I asked, suddenly more curious.
“I don’t know,” she said. “That’s what I need you to figure out.” She slid a folded piece of paper across the table and stood up. “I have to go. I’ll check on your progress in a couple of days. In the meantime, don’t tell anyone we spoke.” She turned on one stilettoed heel and sauntered out of BarBar. I opened the paper and read the message. It was short.
“Who is the man in the Tower?” I crumpled up the paper and held it over a candle, watching it diminish in a bright orange flame. Before heading out, I took a turn at spanking Vai’s slave. Not hard, though. I’m no sadist, but I do like to smack an ass every now and then.
I stepped back into the rainy Cyberpong night, dropped 20 baht in the palm of the shoeless, shirtless beggar who always seeks me for a handout, and walked toward Black Pagoda. So, Vai wanted me to find out the identity of the Man in the Tower. No easy task. As I passed XXX Lounge, I could see a parade of girls on stage in various cosplay outfits. I noticed a bright green cat sitting in the doorway, casually licking one paw. For a moment, it paused and looked right at me. That’s weird, I thought and pushed on. Somewhere up the soi, one of the bars was playing “Stripped” by Depeche Mode. It droned out through the doorway and mixed with the sound of the rain.
As I turned to go up the stairs to Pagoda, I noticed a hooded figure in the alley opposite. A porcelain white hand extended out from it and beckoned me over. It was the stranger from the Strip. The one who’d warned me about Vai. She backed into the alley, out of sight. I followed her into the darkness.

The woman in the cloak waited for me in a dark corner at the back of the alley. As I approached, she removed her hood, revealing blazing red hair and emerald eyes that flashed with an inscrutable intensity. Her hand flashed out and grabbed me, pulling me close. Her lips were an inch away from mine.
“What did she tell you?” she asked. “Did she mention the Man in the Tower?”
“How did you know that?” I replied. “What do you know about him?”
“Just the rumours everyone else has heard. That he’s a vampire or the ghost of Tony Poe. Or that it’s Bowie.” Everyone knew the story of David Bowie is alive and well somewhere inside of Cyberpong. I’d heard the theory that The Man was Tony Poe, the real-life special ops soldier that Coppola modelled his Colonel Kurtz character after in Apocalypse Now! In actuality, I’d always suspected that if anyone ever did get to The Tower, it wouldn’t be Poe they found, rather it would be the holographic image of a bald and black-clad Marlon Brando, sitting cross-legged on the rug in the middle of the room.
Now might be an appropriate time to explain the origin of the “Man in the Tower” myth.
In the OW Patpong, above the roof of Bada Bing and the Strand Hotel, there’s a room set atop a tower. In the OW, it likely serves some innocuous purpose. But in Cyberpong, it is a sanctum. Impossible to reach, bound in mystery. It is a foreboding place, a forbidden place. The earliest rumours were that a vampire inhabited the tower and that anyone foolish enough to go there would have their Cyberpong avatar disintegrated and all accumulated wealth and experience in the digital space would be sucked into the essence of the being ensconced therein. In recent times, however, the stories leaned in a decidedly different direction. People talked about an actual CP player—an OW gamer who somehow figured out how to manifest supernatural powers inside of Cyberpong. Not a spectre, or a ghoul, but a character like anyone else, except gifted with some kind of alchemy. With unlimited resources—a virtual money tree. Maybe that’s what Vai was after. Not the person, but the purse.
“Hey!” my companion shouted. “Snap out of it. I asked what you know about the Man in the—”
“I heard you,” I replied. “First things first. What’s your name?”
She stared at me a moment. I could feel myself getting lost in those emerald eyes.
“You can call me Chase,” she said softly. “Now spill it. What do you know, and what does Vai want you to do?” I hesitated. Both of these women are strangers. Both are clearly in opposition to one another and I’m trapped in the middle. There’s no reason to trust one over the other. No reason, in fact, to trust either of them.

All first, second, and third edition NFT holders will be granted lifetime access to the Cyberpong Metaverse as part of the platform’s Inner Circle and will likewise have the right to cast votes for major developmental decisions such as in-game dynamics, proposed rules and regulations, and, most importantly, approving new members. Those who choose to no longer participate in the ecosystem can gift or sell their membership via peer2peer or on any open marketplace that allows the sale of NFTs. A limited run of 6,106 NFT access-cards will be available to the public for a short period of time. After the said amount has been minted, there will no longer be any further deployment of these NFTs used to access the Metaverse.
‘A-Day’ (Alpha Day) marks when Cyberpong opens the gates to new members who are not part of the Inner Circle, while ‘Omega Day‘ is when Cyberpong closes applications in a bid to prevent overpopulation and all the drama that comes with it. This way, the game’s environment and general environment will be maintained in such a way that is comfortable for everyone.
